18 Signs of Overtraining

Yes, it is possible to have too much of a good thing when it comes to fitness. Exercise and training, just like anything else, should be tempered with moderation. Do you know the warning signs your body uses to signal overtraining? Check out the list below and don’t overdo it. (Taken from NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 2011)

Symptoms of Overtraining from Resistance Exercise (Weight Training)

  • Plateau followed by decrease of strength gains
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Decrease in lean body mass (when not dieting)
  • Decreased appetite
  • A cold that just won’t go away
  • Persistent flu-like symptoms
  • Loss of interest in the training program
  • Mood changes
  • Excessive muscle soreness

Common Markers of Aerobic Endurance Overtraining

  • Decreased performance
  • Earlier onset of fatigue
  • Decreased maximal oxygen uptake
  • General discomfort or uneasiness
  • Loss of interest or enthusiam in training
  • Disturbed mood states
  • Increased muscle soreness
  • Altered resting heart rate
  • Increased sub maximal exercise heart rate
