The USDA recently replaced their food pyramid with a plate icon. The previous symbol, known as MyPyramid, has now become ChooseMyPlate. ChooseMyPlate is a way of depicting the recommended quantities and ratios of different food types for nutrition. Some of you may remember the old “Four Basic Food Groups” from the 1980s (I’m dating myself, I know). In 1992 the USDA released the Food Pyramid and revised it in 2005. An now we have a plate…
The plate brings a few changes in the way we should eat. While it still encourages a variety of foods, half of the plate consists of fruits and vegetables, with vegetables being the larger portion. The grain section is also larger than the protein portion, as nutrition experts recommend more grains. The plate also aims to keep portion sizes under control and includes a side of dairy.
Visit choosemyplate.gov for more information on the new plate. The TD Fitness Resources Page has links to this and other government health, nutrition, and fitness sites.
