The benefits of functional training cannot be overstated. There is more to fitness than large muscles and marathon endurance. What most of us need is the ability to handle our body weight and momentum as we perform the activities of daily life. It’s also important to have strength to push, pull, lift, and carry items everyday. The body works as a unit and should be trained as such.
This month, my wife and I attended a TRX certification course to better instruct and inform those we train. If you’re not familiar with the TRX, it’s a suspension trainer that allows you to use your body weight to vary levels of intensity as you perform one of a seemingly unlimited number of exercises. The benefit of this particular device is that your core muscles are engaged with each exercise, even as you isolate muscle groups in your upper and lower body.
My first exposure to the TRX stems back to a personal trainer conference I attended years ago where I saw its benefit and subsequently bought one that night! Since then I’ve used it through several military deployements and today, the people I work with truly love it. The uniqueness of the TRX Suspension Trainer lies in its ease of use, light-weight portability and size (less than 2 pounds), and its truly functional nature.
