This month, we answer a question submitted by a member of the TD Fitness community. S.M. asks, “Can we combat cortisol and stress induced belly fat? Is it irreversible?”
The immediate effects of stress are positive, and in fact, aid in the body’s fight-or-flight response. Continued stress over a period of time however, causes the body to release the hormone cortisol. Among other things, cortisol increases our appetite and some research has even shown that weight gain in the abdominal area is attributed to this hormone.
So how do we counter the effects of cortisol?
The real question we should ask is this: What can we do to combat stress? Cortisol isn’t the only negative side effect of a stressful lifestyle. We typically lose sleep, exercise less, and possibly increase alcohol intake when we are stressed. All of these are detrimental to our health.
A key component to fighting stress…exercise more. Exercise not only releases stress-fighting endorphins that can lower cortisol levels, it also burns calories. And calorie burn is important in reducing fat, abdominal or otherwise. Another way to reduce stress – be more social. Spending time with friends and family can have a huge effect on our mood, helping us forget about the stress factors in our lives and providing some much needed relaxation. Finally, try other relaxing outlets such as yoga, meditation, or massage. The calming effects of these activities help counter stressful periods in our lives.
Stress can have just as much of an effect on your body as it does your mind. Remember that stress needs your permission to effect you. Try to stay positive, maintain control of your emotions, and stay focused on the important things in life.
